Book Club's Summer Read: Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

"Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master...A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life...as only a dog could tell it." http://www.garthstein.com/arr/

Come to the library for your copy!

Program Canceled; Floating Classroom Outing Full: Summer Reading Fun Continues!

The August 2nd program for girls, about self-esteem and dealing with bullies, has been canceled.

We hope to offer it again, at a less busy time of year, if we think there is an interest. If you would like to see this program happen, please let us know!

We hope you are enjoying your summer days- with a good book in hand! Our adult summer reading prize drawings start tomorrow. Enter to win gift certificates to Village businesses Wax 'n Wicks Candles, Sadie's Pharmacy and Gifts, and one TBA. Simply come to the library and write down a book you've read, with your contact info, to qualify. (More about adult summer reading: click here!)

Our Floating Classroom outing is already full. Kids can still sign up for our summer reading program, though, and if they read ten books they get all sorts of goodies. (More about kids summer reading: click here!)

We will post details on our August 11 program for children soon.

Summer Reading and the Lake George Monster

Sign-up for our summer reading program!

Children registered at the Caldwell-Lake George Library will be eligible for gift certificates and prizes (some reading required!).

In keeping with the statewide summer reading theme
Water: Make A Splash, Make Waves,
kids who are:
7 and older
and
signed up at the library for our Summer Reading program

are invited on a voyage of the LGA's Floating Classroom!

More events for all ages to be announced
The water theme also gives us a chance to celebrate Lake George's very own monster, Georgie.
image from the Lake George Monster Investigative File (click here)

Georgie was 'born' in the summer of 1904, in Hague, NY. He popped up all over Lake George, and seemed to like teasing people. Later he was the star of a local carnival, escaped a fire, and traveled all the way to the Virgin Islands and back.

To celebrate summer reading and our beautiful lake waters, we have Georgie-related handouts and make-your-own lake monster puppets in our children's room. We encourage kids and parents to learn more about Georgie's colorful life: pay him a visit at the Lake George Historical Association Museum. (Hours: July - August, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays - 11am to 4pm.Wednesdays, Thursdays - 3pm to 8pm. Closed Sundays and Mondays.)

Two new tricks on the Public Access Catalog

The Online Library Catalog isn't just a list of books!

Well, yes: you can search through the collections of the SALS and MVLS library systems. But it also gives you access to your library account: log on to place requests, perform renewals, see what items you have out, their due dates, and fines (not that you would ever have fines).

In addition, the online catalog has recently been updated. You can now:

Look for items currently on the shelf
Check online to see what's available at the library (especially handy if you don't have time to browse). Jot down the title or call number, and ask at the desk if you need help locating the book, audiobook, movie or CD you seek.

Create a personal username
Previously, logging into your patron account required the thirteen digit barcode number on the back of your library card. Now you can make up your own, as simple or memorable as you like.

The online catalog is accessible from any PC/Mac with internet access, and is also available within all libraries. Please let us know if you have questions or trouble using the catalog.
