Patron Policy

Under Chapter 2.26 of New York State Education Law the Board of Trustees may enact policies that protect the safety of staff and patrons, protect library materials and furnishings and maintain order in the building. The library board and staff want to ensure that all patrons receive high quality service without disruption or threatening behavior from other people in the library.

Privacy
Caldwell-Lake George Library adheres to the American Library Association's Code of Ethics:

“We protect each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.”

To protect your privacy, and the privacy of others:
  • Patrons must bring their library card or other form of ID. You may not check out items held for another patron, unless you bring that patron's card.
  • All lost cards should be reported immediately.
Disruptive Behavior
Disruptive behavior is defined by, but not limited to, any behavior that disrupts another patron's use of the library or threatens safety of patrons or staff. Patrons will be told if behavior is unacceptable, and if it continues they will be asked to leave. If persons refuse to leave, police may be called.  Disruptive behavior includes:

  • Excessive noise (loud talking, shouting); running, throwing objects; abusive language or obscene gestures; smoking; sleeping; damage or misuse of library materials, furniture or equipment.
  • Cell phones must be turned off.
  • Shirt and shoes must be worn.
  •  Animals are prohibited, except for service animals.
  • Alcohol and illegal substances are prohibited.
  • Children must be properly supervised. Library staff cannot supervise or care for children. Children under 12 should be supervised by their parent or caregiver at all times. Small children should be accompanied to the bathroom. Parents or caregivers will remain in the library while children attend programs such as preschool story hour. Parents will be told if children's behavior is unacceptable.
  • No soliciting. Patrons may not solicit library staff or other patrons to donate money or time or purchase items.
